Keonjhar: Smruti Sekhar Jena (36) of Pandua village in Jagatsinghpur district was arrested by Keonjhar Sadar police on Wednesday in connection with a railway job fraud.According to the investigation, he allegedly cheated a job aspirant’s family by falsely posing as a personal assistant to the railway general manager and promising employment in East Coast Railway.Police revealed that Jena dishonestly induced the complainant, Mangal Oram (61) of Jadipada village under Sadar police station limits, to part with Rs 9,98,997 on the false assurance of securing a govt job for his daughter. The amount was deposited in two bank accounts provided by Jena between Dec 2023 and April 2024, police said.To gain Oram’s confidence, Jena allegedly issued a fake East Coast Railway joining letter in the name of his daughter for the post of electrical engineer. However, no employment was provided.Sadar police seized the fake joining letter, bank deposit slips and transaction records. “Verification confirmed that the deposited amount had been credited to bank accounts belonging to the accused, thereby corroborating the allegations and establishing the financial trail,” said Amit Kumar Bhuyan, IIC, Sadar police station.Bhuyan said that acting on reliable intelligence, the investigating team traced the accused from a rented house at Pakhad Village under Patkura police station limits, Kendrapada district, where he was apprehended.During interrogation, Jena admitted to his involvement in the offence. “Further investigation is in progress, and the final report will be submitted before the competent court upon completion of the investigation,” the IIC said.
