Silchar: An attempt to smuggle three buffaloes across the India-Bangladesh border was foiled by alert local youths at Katigorah in Cachar, late on Saturday night, police said.According to sources, suspected smugglers cut through a stretch of barbed-wire fencing along the Chandigarh border route and attempted to push the animals across the international boundary.

Local youths, who noticed the suspicious movement, raised an alarm. When they gave chase, the smugglers allegedly tried to attack them with daggers.“The miscreants had their faces covered with a black cloth and were armed with daggers. They attempted to attack us, but since we were more in numbers, they fled towards the Bangladesh border, leaving the buffaloes behind,” one of the youths involved in the chase said.The rescued animals were later handed over to members of the Village Defence Party (VDP), who subsequently informed the police.Katigorah police took custody of the buffaloes and has launched an investigation.
