Amritsar: A new photograph of Indian national Sarabjit Kaur showing her in a car with her lawyer has surfaced in Pakistani media, implying that the 48-year-old has been released from a shelter home after plans to deport her to India stalled. The Kapurthala woman had gone missing from a Sikh jatha that had gone to the neighbouring country to mark the 556th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev in Nov last year. She married a Pakistani national after converting to Islam. She was arrested last month for overstaying her visa. A petition was filed seeking her deportation. She was subsequently shifted to Dar-ul-Aman, a women’s shelter home in Lahore, while officials deliberated her legal status and possible handover to Indian authorities.
Reports suggest that Sarabjit was released from the shelter home on Feb 11 and has returned to her husband’s home. The Pak govt clarified that she could not be kept in custody for political reasons. According to officials, as reported in Pak media, the decision to release her was taken after considering legal and humanitarian aspects. MSID:: 128261130 413 |
