Kanpur: Widespread light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in the evening brought much-needed relief to Kanpur from sultry weather conditions on Sunday. According to the CSA weather observatory, the maximum temperature remained almost unchanged at 34.8 degrees Celsius, just 0.2 degrees higher than Saturday’s 34.6 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature also remained steady at 26.8 degrees Celsius.Although the maximum relative humidity declined slightly in the day, it remained high enough to add to people’s discomfort. The observatory recorded maximum relative humidity at 78 per cent. South-easterly winds blew across the city at speeds ranging between 7.1 and 11.4 kmph, but they failed to provide much relief from the sultry conditions.According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon remains active over the region, resulting in continued humid conditions and rainfall in different parts of the division. During the next 24 hours, districts of the Kanpur division are likely to witness partly to mostly cloudy skies, with chances of light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms.In Kanpur Nagar, cloudy conditions are expected to persist, with a strong possibility of moderate rain and thunderstorms during the afternoon or night. The probability of precipitation has been estimated at 40 to 70 per cent. The maximum temperature is likely to remain between 32 and 33 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may range from 27 to 28 degrees Celsius.Easterly winds are expected to blow at speeds of 8 to 14 kmph, while relative humidity is likely to remain high at 80 to 90 per cent.S N Sunil Pandey, weather expert at CSA University, said increasing atmospheric moisture and the formation of new weather systems were leading to a greater flow of moisture over the region. He said Kanpur division was likely to experience cloudy conditions on August 3 as well.He added that isolated areas could receive light drizzle to light or moderate rainfall accompanied by gusty winds, thunderstorms and lightning.Strong surface winds are also likely during this period. However, intermittent sunshine between spells of cloud and rain could continue to make the weather humid and uncomfortable for residents
