Kanpur: Kanpur Nagar has secured the second position in the state in terms of electricity generation through solar rooftops. Lucknow holds the first place, while Varanasi ranks third. This achievement indicates that public participation in solar energy initiatives is growing rapidly within the city.Under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, the scope of solar energy in Kanpur Nagar has expanded rapidly. Electricity generation through solar rooftops installed on residential roofs has crossed the 100 megawatts mark. As on April 14, a power generation capacity of 103 megawatts has been recorded through 29,304 installations, reflecting the growing use of clean energy in the district.The PM Surya Ghar Scheme was reviewed during a meeting held at the New Auditorium located at Sarsaiya Ghat, presided over by district magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh.The officials informed that the pace of solar rooftop installations in the district remains steady. Currently, an average of 108 installations are being carried out daily. Solar rooftops have been installed on the roofs of 2,573 homes in February, 3,215 in March, and 1,515 in April (up to April 14).Kanpur Nagar has been included under the City Acceleration Program. Forty cities across the country have been selected for this program, including Ayodhya, Varanasi, Lucknow, Kanpur Nagar, and Prayagraj from Uttar Pradesh. The objective of this initiative is to develop these cities as Solar Cities.From April 20 to April 26, an awareness campaign will be conducted in urban areas using the ‘Surya Rath’ and through it people will be informed about the benefits of the scheme and encouraged to obtain solar connections.The district magistrate directed that the benefits of the scheme be extended to the maximum number of eligible families, and that the entire process be kept simple, transparent, and time-bound. He placed emphasis on the effective implementation and expansion of the scheme.
