Jaipur: A 27-year-old woman from Jodhpur district, Shamu, died Monday after a 26-day battle with severe postpartum complications following a normal delivery at Tinwari Community Health Centre in Jodhpur.Hospital officials said she suffered severe postpartum haemorrhage soon after childbirth on June 24 and was rushed to Umaid Hospital on the same day. Doctors performed a hysterectomy to remove her uterus and control the bleeding, but failed as she continued to lose blood and slipped into hypovolaemic shock, a critical condition caused by the loss of more than 20% of the body’s blood or fluid.The shock affected her kidneys and led to further complications. On June 29, she was shifted to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital for advanced treatment. Doctors said she was admitted in critical condition and was put on ventilator support from the first day.“She died of multiple organ failure. She was referred to us in a critical condition and from day one of her admission she underwent treatment on ventilator support,” Dr Fateh Singh, superintendent of MG Hospital, told TOI.Officials said the initial haemorrhage triggered a chain of complications, including kidney problems, acute respiratory distress syndrome and signs of severe infection. On July 15, she complained of persistent vomiting. Doctors found an internal intestinal obstruction and operated to remove it, but her condition did not improve.She later developed septicaemia, a serious bloodstream infection, followed by multi-organ failure. Despite continued treatment, doctors could not revive her, officials said.
