LUCKNOW: A 16-year-old girl was taken into custody while her 20-year-old boyfriend was arrested for allegedly killing her 76-year-old maternal grandfather after he allegedly caught them in a compromising position at their home in Jhansi district, police said.The incident took place in Chhirona village under Chirgaon police station limits.According to police and the family, the elderly man was strangled and repeatedly hit on the head with a chakla (rolling board) before his body was dumped in a well behind the house.The suspected murder came to light three days after the family found blood-stained clothes belonging to the teenager inside the house.Suspicion fell on the girl and, during questioning by family members, she allegedly confessed to her involvement and disclosed the sequence of events.According to the family, the deceased’s wife had gone out for daily-wage work while he and his teenage granddaughter were at home. The girl subsequently called her boyfriend, Vishal Kushwaha, to the house.When the elderly man returned home, he allegedly found the two inside a room. The girl reportedly told her family that Vishal strangled him to prevent him from raising an alarm. She allegedly then struck her grandfather several times on the head with a chakla, resulting in his death.The two allegedly carried the body outside and threw it into a well behind the house. The man’s family began looking for him and found his body lying inside the well the following morning.According to the family, the man had an injury on his forehead. Believing that he may have accidentally fallen into the well while intoxicated, the family treated the death as an accident and performed his last rites.The matter took a different turn on September 15, when family members were cleaning the house as part of rituals following his death and found blood-stained clothes belonging to the teenager.The discovery raised suspicion, following which relatives questioned her. She allegedly confessed to killing her grandfather and told them about Vishal’s involvement.The family subsequently approached Chirgaon police and reported the matter. Police arrested Vishal for questioning, following which details of the alleged crime emerged.The 16-year-old girl was subsequently taken into custody on Wednesday. Police said a case has been registered against the two in connection with the murder.SP Rural Arvind Kumar said police had recovered blood-stained clothes and other evidence linked to the incident. A forensic team also visited the scene and collected evidence as part of the investigation.According to the family, the elderly couple had been raising the girl since childhood after her mother died around 10 years ago. She had two daughters and a son, and the couple had taken the two girls into their care.The elder granddaughter reportedly moved to a relative’s house around three years ago, while the 16-year-old continued to live with her grandparents and was studying in Class 10.The deceased, who lived in Chhirona village, worked in farming and as a labourer, while his wife also worked as a daily-wage labourer. The couple had six daughters, all of whom are married.
