Chandigarh: A special CBI court in Panchkula on Friday acquitted 56 people in connection with the 2016 attack on the residence of Captain Abhimanyu, then Haryana finance minister and senior BJP leader, during the Jat violence.Sources indicate that the acquittal followed a compromise between the complainant and the accused, leading several prosecution witnesses to turn hostile. A copy of the judgment was not yet available at the time of this report. The case was registered on a complaint filed by Captain Abhimanyu’s family alleging that a mob attacked and set fire to their home. While family members and others present managed to escape, the complaint said that the crowd looted and destroyed property worth crores of rupees, including cash and jewellery. Several youths spent considerable time in custody during the investigation. The case was initially registered at a Rohtak police station before being transferred to the CBI. MSID:: 128854622 413 |
