Kanpur: The power department on Wednesday disconnected electricity supply to two major Jal Nigam treatment plants in the Jajmau area of the city over non-payment of power bills, officials said.Power department sources said Rs 365 crore was pending in power bills. They said the department disconnected the lines as no payment was made. Due to the power disconnection, sewage water could not be treated and sources claimed lakhs of litres of untreated water was discharged in the river.The disconnection affected the 36 MLD Common Effluent Treatment Plant and the 5 MLD treatment plant. The officials said the 5 MLD plant was inoperative for quite some time, while the 36 MLD plant operated with the help of generator sets. They said limited operation reduced the working efficiency of the 36 MLD plant, and sewage and industrial waste could not be properly treated. They said there were apprehensions that the level of pollution would increase.Dhananjeev Kumar, assistant engineer (connection), said total urban arrears against Jal Nigam touched Rs 365 crore. He said, “Two days before power connection of PS-1, 2 and 3 were disconnected against the arrear of Rs 33 crore.” Eectricity would be restored once the JalKal department cleared all dues, he said.Ashish Jayam, junior engineer, said, “Power connection of 36 MLD treatment plants was disconnected due to non-payment of power bills..”Dhananjeev said that several notices were sent to the Jal Nigam but there was no response. Action was initiated on the night of Tuesday.
