Peace Marches Held in Jaisalmer and Barmer Amid Opposition to Border Encroachment Removal Drive

Jaisalmer: Residents in Rajasthan’s border districts are protesting the ongoing official drive to dismantle alleged illegal constructions and encroachments on govt land within a 0-50 km radius of the Pakistan border. Directed by the Union home ministry and the Govt of Rajasthan, the drive has ignited resentment among locals.In response to the escalating dissatisfaction, the Sarv Samaj Samanvay Committee organised a Sarv Shanti and Sadbhav March in Jaisalmer Thursday. Protesters voiced their concerns over the removal of structures on govt land, including mosques, dargahs, and mazars.A simultaneous demonstration unfolded at the Barmer district headquarters, where a diverse array of political figures and community members rallied together. Barmer MP Ummeda Ram Beniwal and Baytu MLA Harish Choudhary highlighted the role of community harmony amid govt actions. A memorandum outlining their objections was presented to Barmer District Collector Chinmayee Gopal.The silent processions attracted substantial crowds, as participants carried placards advocating for humanity, harmony, and social unity. Former cabinet minister Saleh Mohammad Friday praised the locals’ commitment to peace and communal brotherhood during these tumultuous times, highlighting the region as a symbol of love and social harmony. At a press conference, he commended the restraint and wisdom demonstrated by the diverse communities in the face of govt actions, saying that this is an inspiring example for the entire nation.In Jaisalmer, the march was led by Sarv Samaj Samanvay Committee convener Ashok Tanwar, who began the procession at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and concluded with a significant public gathering where community grievances were aired. Tanwar criticised the govt’s methods, alleging a biased approach in the enforcement of removal orders and different standards applied to religious sites. Beniwal emphasised maintaining the region’s historical legacy of social cohesion, asserting the community’s support for national security measures, but calling for adherence to legal protocols in administrative actions regarding encroachments. He urged the govt to ensure that affected parties receive adequate notice and opportunity to respond.
