Vasco: Velsao-Pale-Issorcim gram sabha resolved to oppose the proposed alteration of Issorcim village’s jurisdiction on Sunday.Gram sabha members also opposed its proposed transfer/inclusion under the Chicolna–Bogmalo panchayat. The special gram sabha was called in response to the memorandum issued by the director of panchayats dated July 31, 2026, following a request from the Chicolna–Bogmalo panchayat and certain individuals, seeking the merger/inclusion of Issorcim village under the Chicolna–Bogmalo panchayat. The people of Issorcim strongly questioned the basis and necessity of the proposal, especially since the panchayat opposed similar attempts twice.Congress leader Olencio Simoes asked the authorities why an alteration has been proposed despite villagers’ opposition.“The people of Issorcim have, for generations, traditionally depended upon fishing, agriculture, coconut plantations and other allied traditional occupations for their livelihood. The village possesses a distinctive rural and coastal character, with agricultural lands, coconut plantations, natural resources and a traditional community ecosystem that must be protected”, said Simoes, highlighting the importance of the Hollant–Issorcim coastal area, known for traditional fishing activities and the coastal ecosystem.Villagers have urged govt to withdraw the memorandum and respect the people’s democratic voice. They said that Issorcim belongs to its people, and its identity, livelihood, environment and traditional rights must be protected.
