Hyderabad: Even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in high-level talks in Israel to deepen cooperation in trade, innovation and strategic sectors, Israeli authorities stepped up outreach at the grassroots level in India by promoting pilgrimage tourism as a key bridge between the two nations. The Israel ministry of tourism (IMOT) conducted a Holy Land Awareness Programme in Hyderabad at the archbishop’s house, in collaboration with the archdiocese of Hyderabad. The event brought together Catholic clergy and leaders from various Christian denominations to discuss the spiritual, pastoral and logistical aspects of pilgrimages to the Holy Land.
The programme is part of a wider national outreach that has included similar sessions in Kochi and Bengaluru, aimed at helping church leaders plan and coordinate group pilgrimages with updated information on travel, infrastructure and safety. Addressing the gathering, Cardinal Poola Anthony, Archbishop of Hyderabad, highlighted the profound spiritual importance of visiting the land central to Christian faith, urging clergy to see pilgrimages as opportunities for renewal, and deeper scriptural engagement rather than mere travel. IMOT’s director of marketing Amruta Bangera outlined Israel’s readiness to host Indian pilgrims, citing streamlined visa processes, improved connectivity, robust safety standards and dedicated support for faith-based groups. Adding a practical perspective, George Devassy, CEO of Magi group of companies, emphasised the need for thoughtfully designed itineraries, particularly allowing sufficient time in Galilee and Jerusalem for a meaningful spiritual experience. Officials said the initiative also aligns with ongoing efforts to formalise tourism cooperation through a proposed bilateral agreement, positioning pilgrimage travel — alongside business and MICE tourism — as a growing pillar of India-Israel ties.
