Kolkata: Faculty members and students of Indian Statistical Institute staged a protest against the proposed ISI Bill on Thursday, a day after a full-time director took charge. The protesters expressed apprehension about probable passage of the bill for discussion during the current Parliament session. “The Parliament is in session and the draft ISI Bill is with the cabinet. Despite our objections, the ministry of statistics and program implementation is proceeding with the new Bill. When the former officiating director, Ayanendranath Basu, approached the ministry last month to submit certain opinions from some statutory bodies, he did not get a good response,” said a teacher. They pointed out that the ministry was trying to move the Bill even as the post of the chief statistician of India lay vacant. “The ministry is yet to hold any discussion on the Bill with the faculty members,” a professor said.
