Patna: Bihar has recorded a sharp acceleration in rooftop solar installations this year, with monthly additions rising four-fold in eight months under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY), according to data provided by the Energy Department.A total of 768 rooftop solar panels were installed across the state in January, while the number increased to 3,068 in August. The installations cover both state power distribution companies — South Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd (SBPDCL) and North Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd (NBPDCL).The pace has continued in September, with 1,699 panels installed in the first 13 days alone. An official said that if the current rate continues, the number of installations could reach around 4,000 by the end of the month.Monthly data shows a steady rise through the year. After 768 installations in January, 987 panels were installed in February, 1,166 in March, 1,400 in April, 1,776 in May, 1,887 in June and 2,736 in July, before the figure touched 3,068 in August.Both DISCOMs have also launched a scheme to install free rooftop solar panels of 1.1 KW capacity for Kutir Jyoti or BPL consumers. The companies are working to install rooftop solar panels in 2.5 lakh households by the end of November this year. The government is providing 100% subsidy for installations for BPL families.The state government had earlier decided to provide rooftop solar panels free of cost to Kutir Jyoti consumers and extend subsidies to general consumers to promote solar energy as a clean and green power source. The initiative is aimed at making consumers self-reliant in meeting their electricity needs for the next 25 years while supporting environmental protection.While announcing 125 units of free electricity for power consumers in July 2025, the state government had stressed the need to promote green energy, reduce dependence on conventional sources and expand the use of non-conventional energy.Subsidies from the Centre and the state range between Rs 40,000 and Rs 98,000 for rooftop solar installation. Bihar has also made subsidy provisions for all domestic consumers under PMSGMBY.“The move to install rooftop solar panels is intended to make consumers self-reliant in securing energy for their consumption for next 25 years besides ensuring environmental protection,” state Energy Minister Shailesh Kumar alias Bulo Mandal said, adding that it would ensure clean and green energy for the people.“With additional financial assistance from the state government and the availability of loans at low interest rates, it will become easier for consumers to bear the initial cost of installing a solar plant,” Energy Department Secretary Ajay Yadav said.
