Prayagraj: The Indian Railways is moving a step closer to its “superfast” mission on railway tracks, with preparations underway to raise train speeds to 160 kmph.It will increase the distance between two signals from 1km to 2km to facilitate the safe operation of trains at up to 160 kmph, with the Railway Board approving the proposal after consultations with thezonal principal chief electrical engineers. The pilot project will be undertaken by the Southern Railway and, if successful, extended to other zones, including North Central Railway. Officials said this will help loco pilots spot signals earlier, reduce the need for sudden braking and enhance passenger safety and comfort. Experts believe that a train zooming at 160 kmph needs a longer stretch to brake and stop. With signals spaced 2 km apart, loco pilots get an early heads-up, stay alert, and avoid sudden brakes.A high-level meeting chaired by the additional member (traction) was held last month with senior officials from regional railways. Subsequently, in another meeting on Jan 27, it was suggested that the distance between signals be increased from 1 kilometre to 2 kilometres. According to officials, the new system’s first pilot project is set to roll out in the Southern Railway. If it clicks, it will be rolled out nationwide. The Southern Railway has got the green light to prep a detailed proposal for the Railway Board.
