Ahmedabad: The municipal corporation has developed the city’s first tree-integrated green bus stop as a pilot project at Acher AMTS station near Rajul Park Society in Sabarmati.The shelter has been designed around an existing mature tree, instead of removing it, making the tree the central feature of the structure. The design offers natural shade to passengers waiting at the bus stop.AMC officials said specially selected Vernonia elliptica climbers have been planted to spread naturally across the shelter’s roof in the coming months. Once fully grown, the green cover is expected to provide additional shade for passengers and help improve air quality in the surrounding area.The bus shelter has been constructed using sustainable and durable materials. Its dual-layer roof has weather-resistant FRP sheets and cement sheet boards, while ergonomic HPL benches have been installed for passenger comfort. An RCC platform has also been built around the tree to ensure durability.As part of efforts to promote environmental conservation and circular economy practices, recycled construction and demolition waste has been used in the anti-skid paver blocks and kerb stones at the shelter.The facility is also equipped with energy-efficient LED lighting, an intelligent rainwater harvesting system, modern commuter information boards and improved signage for passenger convenience.
