KANPUR: An FIR has been filed against a professor of the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-K) after his wife, an assistant professor at the same institute, accused him of domestic violence, physical assault, mental cruelty, criminal intimidation and attempting to force sexual relations, news agency PTI reported.As per the PTI report, the Kalyanpur police registered the FIR on Wednesday following the woman’s complaint.Police said the case is under investigation and further legal action will be taken based on the evidence collected.“Further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation,” Assistant Commissioner of Police (Kalyanpur) Dilip Kumar Singh said.The complainant, an assistant professor in the Department of Cognitive Science, alleged that she had been subjected to sustained physical and mental abuse since late 2025. She accused her husband, a professor in the Departments of Computer Science and Engineering and Cognitive Science, of repeatedly assaulting and threatening her, damaging household property and subjecting her to prolonged harassment.The woman further alleged that her husband had admitted to having an affair with one of his former PhD scholars and was currently involved in an inappropriate relationship with a woman colleague.She claimed that confronting him over the alleged relationships resulted in repeated assaults and intimidation.According to the complaint, the professor allegedly attempted to force sexual relations despite her refusal. She also alleged that he shared intimate details of their private life with lawyers through emails and subjected her to such mental trauma that she suffered an anxiety attack requiring hospitalisation.Police have invoked relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to cruelty by a husband, voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation, intentional insult and mischief.(With agency inputs)
