After three decades of service, Bhupen Borah, the former head of Assam’s PCC, has made the difficult choice to step away from Congress, expressing profound concerns regarding the party’s trajectory and a wounded sense of dignity. Despite attempts by Congress officials to convince him otherwise, Borah suggested there are unresolved issues at play.

Guwahati: Former Assam PCC president Bhupen Borah felt ignored in Congress as he justified his resignation, which he said he took amid concerns for the party.Speaking to the media in the presence of All India Congress Committee (AICC) and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) leaders, who rushed to Borah’s residence at Ghoramara here, the former PCC leader said, “I did not compromise on self-respect and dignity.”

While Congress leaders, including the AICC leaders, wanted to bring him back to the party, Borah hinted that his self-respect was hurt in Congress.“I stayed with Congress for 32 years after joining the party in 1994. This decision to resign from Congress cannot be only personal. I am concerned about the future of Congress party,” Borah said soon after sending his resignation letter to AICC leaders, including president Mallikarjun Kharge, at 8am on Monday.Borah said he explained in detail the reasons behind his resignation in the letter to AICC. “I cannot divulge more details. At the right time, I will invite the media to give more details,” Borah said. He also did not yet divulge plans to join another party, even as BJP and Raijor Dal were ready to welcome him.While chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said BJP will offer a “safe seat” to Borah to contest the assembly polls, Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi said he was ready to announce Borah as his party’s president.
