T’puram: The state human rights commission (SHRC) has directed the road safety commissioner to conduct an urgent review of the alleged unscientific design and traffic management issues on the General Hospital–Pattom Road, following complaints that the stretch has witnessed a rise in accidents.SHRC chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas ordered that a senior official be deputed to inspect the site. The inspection should also be attended by the general manager of Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB) and the assistant commissioner of traffic police. Based on the findings, the road safety commissioner has been directed to convene a meeting to identify deficiencies in the road’s design and determine the agencies responsible for rectifying them.SHRC instructed that the decisions taken at the official-level meeting be communicated within one month. The chief executive officer of KRFB has also been directed to submit a report on the matter.The panel also sought a report from the Vanchiyoor SHO regarding the registration of an FIR in connection with Wednesday evening’s accident in which Prashanth Kumar, a resident of Malayinkeezhu, suffered the amputation of his right leg after a car allegedly hit the two-wheeler he was riding.The SHO has also been directed to inform the secretary of district legal services authority if the victim requires legal assistance. Within one month, the SHO must submit a report detailing Kumar’s present condition, medical treatment, and other relevant information. The DLSA secretary of the District Legal Services Authority has also been asked to report on the steps taken to secure interim compensation and relief for the victim.The representatives concerned have been directed to appear before SHRC on Sept 3.
