New Delhi: Slogan-shouting, placards and members climbing onto tables disrupted MCD’s House meeting Thursday, forcing mayor Pravesh Wahi to adjourn the proceedings twice amid a faceoff between BJP and the opposition.What was expected to be a discussion on monsoon preparedness and civic issues turned into a shouting match, with the House witnessing repeated disruptions and adjournments as AAP councillors protested the ethanol-mixed fuel policy.The meeting, scheduled to begin at 2pm, finally started 2.45pm. Before the proceedings commenced, AAP councillors were seen carrying placards reading: “Stop mixing ethanol; BJP, be ashamed”. As the protests intensified, Wahi adjourned the House.When the proceedings resumed, disruptions continued as BJP councillors raised slogans against AAP and its national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, triggering a noisy exchange between the two sides. Amid the uproar, the mayor adjourned the House again.Before the adjournment, the House passed agenda items, including proposals for the demolition of two closed dhalaos (garbage collection points), unused public urinal blocks, and other civic matters.Following the meeting, Wahi criticised the opposition, saying the House was meant to discuss civic issues, including measures to tackle vector-borne diseases during the monsoon. “We wanted to discuss an issue directly related to MCD and public health. But the opposition was not interested in any constructive discussion. They wanted to disrupt the House over an issue that does not even fall under the jurisdiction of MCD,” he said.Leader of the Opposition Ankush Narang defended the protest, saying, “If E-20 is better for the environment, then let BJP govt explain whether every vehicle is compatible with it. If a vehicle gets damaged, who will be held responsible? Why is BJP govt imposing an additional financial burden on the common man?”
