Ahmedabad: What was meant to be a showcase of two- and four-wheelers soon shifted gears into a controversy for Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Ltd (SRFDCL), operated by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). The event turned into a vehicle drifting show, with its videos widely circulated online. All was fun and games until cops arrived. SRFDCL officials are now left explaining why the multi-level parking was rented out for such an event.SRFDCL officials rented out the parking to a private organiser for the entire Sunday for just Rs 2 lakh on the understanding that the event was just an exhibition of luxury cars and two-wheelers.Videos that went viral on social media told a different story. They showed riders of modified motorcycles revving engines and sliding into drifts inside the parking facility. There were rows of fancy SUVs and sedans. In some clips, flames appeared to shoot out from car bonnets and reach the parking structure’s ceiling. The footage also showed large crowds capturing the stunts on their phones.Sources said the multilevel parking was developed solely for vehicle parking and that no policy exists to rent out the facility for purposes unrelated to the purpose. “However, as a special case, an SRFDCL official allowed the space to be hired for the day. During the event, a four-wheeler was involved in an accident, prompting police intervention. As videos of the stunts circulated widely online, questions began to be raised over how a public parking facility ended up doubling as a stunt arena,” a source said.Amrutesh Aurangabadkar, deputy municipal commissioner and SRFDCL official, said, “In this entire matter, we have taken the decision to forfeit the organiser’s deposit.”————-
