Dibrugarh: A landmark memorial park developed within the premises of the historic Jorhat Central Jail, as part of a series of major public infrastructure projects unveiled in Jorhat district, was inaugurated by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday.Developed over nearly 170 bighas of land at an estimated cost of Rs 159 crore, Swaraj Udyan aims to preserve the history of Assam’s freedom movement, while transforming part of the old jail complex into a heritage tourism destination. The newly developed Swaraj Udyan features memorial installations honouring the contributions of freedom fighters from across the northeast. At the entrance, the names of all eight states have been engraved, symbolising the region’s shared legacy in the nation’s struggle for freedom.“Swaraj Udyan stands as a tribute to the brave freedom fighters. Just as the Cellular Jail reminds us of the sacrifices made during the freedom struggle, this memorial will preserve the stories of our heroes,” the CM said.
