Jaisalmer: Acting on a tip by CID’s border intelligence (BI) wing, police in Sriganganagar Thursday conducted a joint operation with BSF to foil an attempt to smuggle heroin by a drone from across the international border and detained five men, including three residents of Punjab who allegedly came to take delivery of the consignment, and two locals.Police said around 10 kg of heroin, packed in 20 packets of 500 grams each and valued at around Rs 50 crore, was recovered from a field in the border area under Rawla police station jurisdiction. Superintendent of police Hari Shankar said CID BI shared inputs about a large consignment of heroin being dropped by a drone in the border area to be collected by Indian smugglers. He said police and CID BI maintained vigilance in coordination with BSF, and early on Thursday, movement was noticed in a field in the border village of 2 KND, following which a joint search operation was launched.The SP said police along with CID BI additional SP Diksha Kamra were interrogating the detained smugglers. An extensive search operation is continuing across the border area in coordination with BSF, he said.Police said investigation is underway to determine whether the heroin was dropped in a single delivery by a large quadcopter drone or brought across the border in three or four trips.
