Heavy traffic movement on Tonk Road Wednesday

Jaipur: Heavy rain lashed Jaipur Wednesday afternoon, ending days of sultry weather but inundating roads, triggering traffic snarls across the city and disrupting daily life as several low-lying areas went under water.

Major roads and intersections, including SMS Hospital, Ajmeri Gate, Tonk Road, JLN Marg, M D Road, Gopalpura Bypass, Sanganer Gate, Chandpole and parts of the Walled City, witnessed waterlogging. A section of a newly constructed road near Khirni Phatak was also damaged due to the downpour.

The rain brought traffic to a crawl in several parts of the city. A commuter said she was stranded for 10-15 minutes at the JDA Circle traffic signal. Another resident said it took her nearly two hours to travel the approximately 7 km stretch from Tilak Nagar to Lalkothi.A man in Jawahar Nagar’s Kacchi Basti said he was unable to book an app-based cab because of the rain, while a student travelling on Tonk Road said the auto-rickshaw she was travelling in broke down after passing through the waterlogged stretch near Tonk Phatak.In another incident, a neem tree uprooted by strong winds and rain fell on a parked car outside the Jaipur Municipal Corporation headquarters on Tonk Road around 2 pm. Parking staff said the tree’s roots had weakened over time as it was surrounded by concrete. The car’s roof was damaged, but no injuries were reported. A JMC team later cleared the fallen tree from the spot.
