Chennai: Madras high court on Friday suspended a five year jail-term imposed on Shaji Purushothaman of EMPEE group of companies for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. On May 22, 2013, he drove his luxury car while drunk and ran over six people on a pavement at Egmore, killing a 13-year-old boy, Muniraj.Justice M Nirmal Kumar granted him bail pending disposal of the appeal moved by Shaji challenging his conviction and sentence awarded by a trial court in the case. The court has directed him to appear before the trial court concerned once in three months.On July 30, a Chennai sessions court found him guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and sentenced him to five years imprisonment with a penalty of ₹10,000.In the incident, Muniraj, Vasu, Khaja Mohaideen, Subarchita and Mani, who were sleeping on the pavement near a govt maternity hospital at Egmore, were injured. Muniraj later died of injuries.
