Chennai: Madras high court on Tuesday rejected a petition challenging the election of S Jayakumar from Perundurai constituency. The plea was moved by DMK candidate Thoppu Venkatachalam, who has since quit the party.The court held that the plea did not disclose any of the grounds legally permissible for challenging an election.Justice D Bharatha Chakravarthy passed the order while rejecting the plea moved by Venkatachalam.Jayakumar contested under AIADMK and won with a margin of 9,693 votes in the 2026 assembly election. He later resigned and joined TVK after voting in support of the govt during the floor test.Venkatachalam, who contested on behalf of DMK, moved a petition challenging Jayakumar’s election. Subsequently, Jayakumar sought dismissal of the election petition.On Tuesday, when the plea came up for hearing, the court held that the election petition filed by Venkatachalam did not contain any of the legally permissible grounds for challenging an election and dismissed it.The former revenue minister quit DMK, claiming to have faced bitter experiences while serving as party district secretary and candidate in the 2026 assembly election.
