Madikeri/ Mysuru: Even as Kabini dam, which traditionally reached its maximum level within days after monsoon season started, is yet to reach its maximum level, another dam in the Cauvery basin in Karnataka reached its full capacity on Friday. Harangi dam in Kodagu district has reached its maximum level even as the water resources authorities have sounded an alarm of releasing floodwater to the river.The dam’s executive engineer MS Mahesh in a press note said the Harangi dam’s catchment areas are receiving heavy rainfall and the inflow into Harangi reservoir has shot up. As per the forecast of IMD, there is a possibility of heavy rainfall in the catchment areas and the inflow is likely to increase further, he stated. Since the reservoir is reaching its maximum level soon, floodwater will be released to the dam, he said.The outflow is likely to be stepped up to 3,000 cusecs, which is likely to reach 5,000 cusecs depending upon the inflow.The authorities asked public and people living on the Harangi river banks to take precautions for the protection of their property and move to safer places. The water level at the Harangi reservoir as on Friday was 2,856.2 ft as against its maximum level of 2,859 ft. The dam’s inflow was 4,522 cusecs.Meanwhile, in Kodagu district, the average rainfall in the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Friday was 19.6 mm. The rainfall from Jan to date is 808.3 mm, which was 1,877 mm during the corresponding period last year.The water level at Kabini dam was 2,273.1 ft as against a maximum of 2,284 ft. The dam in HD Kote, Mysuru district is receiving 2,369 cusecs while 500 cusecs is released to the river. The dam traditionally filled up to the brim within few days of monsoon as Waynad district in neighbouring state of Kerala, which receives monsoon showers first in India, forms its catchment areas.The water level at KRS dam in Mandya district, which shot up last week, is sliding as rain has taken a break. As against a maximum level of 124.8 ft, the reservoir’s level at 8am on Friday was 91.9ft. It is receiving 713 cusecs while 1,578 cusecs is let out of the dam.
