Silchar: Hailakandi police have recovered 500 more cartons of stolen soft drinks in overnight raids, taking the total recovery in the cargo theft case to 1,510 cartons. Two persons have been arrested so far.Police said the recovery was made during separate raids conducted between Tuesday night and early Wednesday at Borjurai and Nunkhuli villages. The arrested accused, identified as Islam Uddin Laskar, 38, of Hailakandi, allegedly concealed part of the stolen consignment. Investigators are questioning him to identify and trace other members of the alleged theft racket.The case involves the disappearance of a truckload of soft drink products being transported from Guwahati to Imphal. Police had earlier recovered 1,010 cartons from different locations in Hailakandi district and arrested Muktajur Rahman Choudhury of Boalipar. The latest seizure raised the total recovery to 1,510 cartons.The truck driver, considered a key suspect, is still absconding.Police said Jag Narayan Prasad, a businessman from Imphal West district in Manipur, had purchased the products worth Rs 15.47 lakh in Guwahati and dispatched them to Imphal in a truck. When the consignment failed to reach its destination on schedule, Prasad lodged an FIR at Banskandi police station in Cachar district, following which a case was registered and an investigation launched.Police said Jag Narayan Prasad, a businessman from Imphal West district in Manipur, purchased the products worth Rs 15.47 lakh in Guwahati and dispatched them to Imphal in a truck.
