Guwahati: The conflict in West Asia has brought uncertainty on the commissioning of piped natural gas supply to household in Guwahati, where the pipeline has already been laid and supply is scheduled for April. The CEO of the company carrying out the project, Ripunjay Phukan, said, “We have 180 piped natural gas consumers in Guwahati’s Geetanagar area. The connections were given more than a year ago. We were planning to commission the connections in the Bhetapara and Beltola areas. But, since we are dependent on the national gas grid, we have also faced issues due to the disruptions caused by the conflict in West Asia.”

However, he said the planned commissioning will be done in April if the situation improves.Phukan added that the company has 2,500 piped gas connections in Silchar. “In Silchar, there is no impact of the crisis as Assam Gas Company Limited takes the gas from ONGC, which is the producer, and we take the gas from Assam Gas Company Limited. In Guwahati, we have to rely on GAIL,” he added. As far as awareness on the piped natural gas, Phukan said people of upper Assam are well aware as it is an oil-producing region.
