An ex-serviceman was arrested in Delhi for allegedly shooting a PG operator

GURGAON: A 40-year-old ex-serviceman was arrested from Delhi on Wednesday, hours after he allegedly shot dead a 32-year-old PG operator over a monetary dispute in Acharya Nagar on Tuesday evening, police said.Amarjeet Grewal alias Amarjeet Fauji, a resident of Bamla village in Bhiwani district, was arrested in a joint operation by teams from Sector 14 police station and Crime Branch Manesar unit.On September 8, Hemant Kaushik, a resident of Acharya Puri (Ganga Vihar), met Grewal at his PG to discuss a financial transaction. According to ACP Naveen Sharma, Hemant had told a friend that Grewal was coming to collect money and asked him to join him.Around 6pm, the two were discussing the transaction when an argument broke out. During the altercation, Grewal allegedly pulled out a pistol and shot Hemant in the forehead at point-blank range before fleeing.“The victim lived with his family including three kids and wife on the ground floor of the paying guest accommodation,” a police officer said.Hearing the gunshot, Hemant’s wife raised an alarm, following which neighbours and PG occupants gathered at the spot.Hemant was initially taken to Kalyani Hospital in Sector 14 and was later shifted to Fortis Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.After receiving information about the shooting, a Sector 14 police team reached the hospital and began an investigation. Based on a complaint filed by Hemant’s friend, a murder case was registered at Sector 14 police station.“Given the seriousness of the crime, teams from Sector 14 police station and Crime Branch Manesar were immediately deployed to trace the accused. Their efforts led to Grewal’s arrest from Delhi within 4-5 hours,” ACP Naveen Sharma said.During questioning, police found that Grewal had retired from the Indian Army in 2024. He and Hemant had become acquainted through a common friend.The investigation revealed that Hemant had borrowed around Rs 6.5 lakh from Grewal in 2021, which eventually led to the altercation, police said.Police are questioning Grewal in detail and conducting searches to recover the weapon allegedly used in the crime. Further investigation is underway.Hemant’s body was handed over to his family after an autopsy on Wednesday.
