GURGAON: A mahapanchayat was called in support of hit-and-run accused Kalyan Singh Bainsla on Friday, days after a video of the incident on Golf Course Road went viral.Reacting to the support, Gurgaon hit-and-run victim Sia, whose real name is Shivani Chauhan, said the event was an attempt to “change the narrative” around the incident.“I don’t understand this at all. Whatever is being done is just to change the narrative. It is not about the community, where they belong or the state. Something wrong happened to me on the road, and it can happen to anyone,” Sia said.She said the incident was not about gender or community.“It is not about a female or male rider. Anyone can lose their life. We are taking a stand so that such incidents can be prevented in the future. It hurts me when we divide wrongdoings on the basis of community,” she said.Sia said she did not know Bainsla’s identity or background when the incident happened.“When this incident happened, I did not know his name, where he belonged or his caste. This is not about caste. All these things being done to change the narrative are illogical. If we do not take strict action today, we will be responsible for leaving people free to kill others on the road,” she said.A group of men were also seen rallying in cars in support of Bainsla on Friday. A video showed several cars driving together on a flyover in Haryana.Bainsla is accused of chasing and ramming Chauhan’s motorcycle on Golf Course Road on Sunday. Police said he was allegedly returning from a club with his friends when the incident took place.Bainsla, his cousin and other friends had gone to The Empire club at MGF Metropolitan Mall on MG Road on Saturday. He had borrowed a Maruti Ciaz from a friend for the outing. Police are yet to ascertain whether the accused were drunk.Police said Shrikant, an associate of Bainsla, was also in the car at the time of the incident. According to sources, co-accused Lavnish allegedly instigated Bainsla to chase Chauhan and also allegedly abused her during the incident.Investigators said the accused followed Chauhan for around 2km. They said Bainsla had asked her to stop. When she did not and instead signalled the car driver to move away, the accused allegedly rammed her motorcycle.Police took the two accused to the spot on Thursday to reconstruct the sequence of events. They had sought two days’ custody for the exercise.A local court on Wednesday sent Bainsla and Lavnish to police custody till Friday.
