Gunmen shoot serving murder convict in city’s Karni Vihar

Jaipur: A 50-year-old murder convict on his way back to the Sanganer open jail was shot dead by two masked men Wednesday evening. The incident occurred around 5:45pm on Dhabas Road in the city’s Karni Vihar area, where the assailants intercepted victim Ganga Sahay’s motorcycle on a busy road.Police said the masked gunmen riding a scooter manoeuvred their vehicle in a way that forced Sahay to stop, before opening fire. Three shots were fired, with one piercing Sahay’s helmet and striking him in the head.The attackers fled the scene immediately after the shooting.The brazen nature of the killing prompted a rapid response from police teams across Karni Vihar, Bhankrota and Chitrakoot. Although a coordinated, emergency blockade was imposed across the Jaipur commissionerate area, the assailants remained on the loose as of late Wednesday night.Deputy commissioner of police (West), Prashant Kiran, said Sahay had been serving a life sentence for the 2018 murder of history-sheeter Mahendra Gurjar in Moti Doongri. He was convicted of the murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2022, before being moved to the Sanganer open jail in May 2025 on account of good behaviour.“We are probing the possibility that Sahay’s targeting was in revenge for Gurjar’s murder,” Kiran said, adding that police are currently interrogating other individuals linked to the latter’s 2018 killing.Police recovered three empty cartridge cases along with a magazine from the scene of crime. An FSL team was later on site to examine the area and collect evidence. Sahay’s body was sent to the SMS Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.CCTV footage from the area showed the two suspects riding ahead of Sahay’s motorcycle before the attack. Police are reconstructing the deceased’s movements from the time he left his home and headed back to the open jail.
