Ahmedabad: A day after protests by ABVP, Gujarat University’s vice-chancellor in charge has constituted a three-member committee to investigate alleged irregularities in high-salary appointments across several departments, including Gujarat University Startup and Entrepreneurship Council (GUSEC).The move comes after ABVP raised objections to appointments made during the tenure of the former vice-chancellor. The student body alleged that four officials were appointed in GUSEC on unusually high salaries, increasing the university’s salary expenditure from around Rs 29 lakh a year to nearly Rs 1 crore.Allegations have also been made regarding appointments to key posts, including chief engineer and chief accountant. The appointments, which involved high pay packages, were allegedly made without following prescribed procedures and recruitment norms. Although objections had reportedly been raised earlier, no formal complaints were filed at the time.After the change in university leadership, ABVP submitted a memorandum alleging illegal appointments and financial mismanagement. Acting on the representation, the vice-chancellor in charge ordered a detailed inquiry.The committee will examine whether the appointments had proper approvals, whether recruitment rules were followed, and whether retired officials were appointed in violation of the guidelines.It will also review other disputed appointments not specifically mentioned by ABVP.The panel will also look into allegations that a professor was given charge of both K S School of Business Management and Faculty of Professional Studies despite allegedly not meeting the eligibility criteria. Action will be taken based on the findings of the committee.
