Artisans and MSMEs have been offered incentives

Gandhinagar: Gujarat has identified a primary product from each of its 33 districts under the Centre’s One District One Product (ODOP) programme and is now looking to aggressively pursue geographical indication (GI) tags for a large number of these products. State govt has proposed expediting the process of obtaining GI tags, which will boost exports and increase incomes of local producers, artisans, farmers and MSMEs.“A presentation was made before the chief minister on Monday regarding the status of the ODOP programme implementation in the state. The CM has directed the administration to ensure that a maximum number of products under ODOP get GI tag for stronger brand identity and market access,” said an official.The ODOP list covers a wide range of products reflecting the economic and cultural strengths of individual districts. Ahmedabad has garment and apparel as its primary ODOP product, Amreli and Junagadh have peanut-based products, Anand and Mehsana have milk-based products, Gir-Somnath has Kesar mango, Navsari has Alphonso mango, Kutch has handicrafts, Surat has gems and jewellery, and Rajkot has machinery products.Other products identified include granite and marble blocks from Banaskantha, chemicals from Bharuch, dehydrated onion from Bhavnagar, ceramic tiles from Sabarkantha and Morbi, banana from Narmada, pharmaceutical engineering products from Vadodara and chemical products from Valsad.The presentation stated that 27 Gujarat products already have GI registration. These include Sankheda furniture, Khambhat agates, Kutch embroidery, Kutch Rogan craft, Kutch bandhani, Ahmedabad Sodagari block printing, Surat zari craft, Gir Kesar mango, Kutchhi kharek, Ambaji white marble, Pethapur block making, Pithora and Warli painting, Patan patola, Rajkot patola and Surati Sadeli craft.“Primary focus will be on packaging, quality certification and export readiness, while connecting ODOP producers with domestic and international buyers through buyer-seller meets and B2B interactions. A dedicated ODOP portal is proposed to provide information on products, producers, farmers, artisans, markets, schemes, assistance and export opportunities,” said an official.The state has already stepped up market promotion of its ODOP products. In 2025-26, more than 150 fairs, exhibitions and promotional events generated sales of over Rs 84 crore, while 77 such events in 2026-27 so far have generated sales of more than Rs 29 crore.Govt has also proposed a 1% export incentive, capped at Rs 10 lakh, along with assistance for quality certification, training and capacity building. Handloom and handicraft startups are eligible for assistance of up to 20%, capped at Rs 6 lakh, under the 2026 expansion of the ODOP programme.
