Guwahati: The Centre for Brahmaputra Studies at Gauhati University has launched a month-long summer internship, CLEAR, to boost climate literacy.The programme, the centre’s first major academic outreach initiative, was inaugurated by CBS director Prof. Dhruba Jyoti Saharia and has drawn nearly 250 participants from universities, colleges and other institutions across the northeast. Dr Dhanjit Das, Dr Kuladip Sharma, Dr Bharati Bharali and Dr Nabajit Kumar Das attended the inaugural session.According to a university release, “Designed as an interdisciplinary learning platform, the internship seeks to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of climate change, disaster risk reduction, environmental sustainability, river basin management, climate change communication and community resilience.”The programme will include lectures and interactive sessions by experts from academia, govt departments, disaster management agencies, environmental organisations, the media and development institutions.Participants will also undertake practical exercises and field-based assignments to apply classroom learning to real-world environmental and development challenges.Addressing the inaugural session, Saharia said, “Climate change is no longer a distant concern; it is a lived reality for communities across the Brahmaputra Basin and the northeast. Through CLEAR, we seek to create a platform where students can learn from experts, engage across disciplines and develop practical skills to contribute towards climate resilience and sustainable development. The future of climate action depends on informed and empowered young people. Participants will be able to serve as climate agents and climate messengers, advancing climate action across the northeast.”
