Silchar: Assam minister Kaushik Rai on Sunday said the govt will soon launch a major eviction drive to clear drains and water channels to curb chronic urban flooding. At an interaction with prominent citizens organised by the Barak Valley development department, Rai said key drainage channels, including Rangirkhal, Singirkhal, Bachaikhal and Longaikhal, have been extensively encroached upon, worsening flooding.“No houses or establishments will be allowed to occupy these water channels. Urban flooding has become a serious menace and a major nuisance for residents. Illegal shops, houses and other structures will be removed very soon,” he added.Rai said the drive would be conducted without political considerations, with “no politics, no favouritism and no vote-bank considerations”. “None will be spared,” he added. He said the government was working on a long-term solution, citing Guwahati’s flood mitigation plan being prepared by a foreign consultancy. On civic polls, Rai said Silchar Municipal Corporation elections are likely before Durga Puja, with electoral roll preparation underway. He said preliminary work for the proposed Silchar flyover, including PWD soil testing, will begin shortly. Repair work on the Birbal Bazaar–Silchar Medical College and Hospital road will also start soon.Cachar guardian minister Krishnendu Paul said the government remains committed to Barak Valley’s development, citing Atmanirbhar Assam initiatives, PMGSY road projects, Son Beel development to boost fish production and exports, and a target of safe drinking water for every household by 2028 under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
