The area, meant to serve as a green buffer, is littered with dry leaves

Gurgaon: The greenbelt along the dividing road of sectors 9 and 9A has become a dumping ground, with residents raising concerns about poor maintenance and inaction by GMDA.The area, meant to serve as a green buffer, is littered with dry leaves, horticulture waste and garbage. Residents said the situation worsened in recent months after the fencing around the greenbelt was removed.“Since the fencing was taken down around six months ago, people have been dumping waste freely. There is no monitoring or upkeep,” said Suraj Bhola, general secretary of Sector 9A.The accumulation of dry waste has raised concerns over fire hazards. “A fire broke out on the stretch a few days ago and residents have to douse it themselves,” said Vinod Arora, RWA president. In addition to garbage, residents said carcasses and household waste are also being dumped on the stretch. “Repeated complaints have not led to any action. No cleaning tenders appear to have been issued for the area. The open and unfenced stretch has also raised safety concerns,” a resident said.Suraj Bhola further said greenbelts should be handed over to RWA. “Residents deserve clean, usable green spaces. The GMDA should consider handing over greenbelts to RWAs for better maintenance,” he said.Meanwhile, according to a GMDA official, “The road has been handed over to GMRL for metro development, and a large number of trees are proposed to be felled as part of the project. We have carried out pruning work in the area but the generated waste was removed simultaneously. The horticulture waste lying in the green belt is from tree cutting undertaken by GMRL and the forest department. However, we will take necessary action for its removal.”
