Chennai: Customs at Chennai airport seized 750g of gold worth 1.14 crore from an Indian national who arrived from Singapore on Sunday.The air intelligence unit intercepted the flyer based on a tip-off. While the check-in baggage was cleared, a personal search led to the seizure of two transparent plastic pouches wrapped in black adhesive tape and hidden in his innerwear. The pouches contained gold paste. On extraction, it yielded 750g of 24-carat gold, valued at 1.14 crore. The gold was seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, and the flyer was remanded in judicial custody. Customs officials said further investigation is underway to ascertain the source of the gold, its intended destination, and possible links to smuggling networks.
