Vadodara: GMERS Medical College and Hospital at Gotri carried out its first-ever organ donation on Monday, with the liver and both kidneys of a brain-dead road accident victim retrieved and transported to Ahmedabad for transplantation. The donor was identified as 40-year-old Jigar Mehta, a resident of Vishnukunj Society, who sustained severe head injuries in a road accident on July 8.He was initially treated at GMERS Gotri before being shifted to Sterling Hospital, where he underwent surgery but was later declared brain dead. He was subsequently shifted back to GMERS Gotri, where the mandatory brain death certification process was completed.
Medical superintendent Dr Anoop Chandnani said the hospital remained in constant coordination with the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) and followed all prescribed protocols before the organs were retrieved.A team from Apollo Hospital, Ahmedabad, retrieved the liver and both kidneys, while the eyes were donated to the Gotri Eye Bank.“The brain death certification process was completed as per protocol, and we remained in continuous liaison with SOTTO. After the final clearance, the organs were retrieved. The heart was not suitable for donation, so only the liver and kidneys were harvested,” Dr Chandnani said.Following the retrieval surgery, the organs were transported to Ahmedabad through a specially created green corridor. The donor’s body was then sent for post-mortem and will be handed over to the family on Tuesday.Mehta is survived by his wife, parents and a young daughter.
