Rajkot: Members of the Dalit community staged a protest at G M Patel Girls Hostel, demanding that authorities register a case against the hostel administration for alleged abetment to the suicide of a 17-year-old student. The deceased, identified as Hiral Hathiya, a resident of the hostel, allegedly died by suicide on March 7 by hanging inside the premises.Protesters alleged that police are shielding those responsible by not initiating appropriate legal action. The victim’s father has accused the hostel administration of harassment, claiming it drove his daughter to take the extreme step, and has demanded strict action against those responsible. However, a senior Jamnagar Rural police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a postmortem has been conducted and a preliminary probe carried out. “No evidence has been found so far to support the allegations made by the victim’s father,” the officer said.Hiral, a Class 11 student and a native of Jam Khambhaliya in Devbhoomi Dwarka district, had reportedly been admitted to the hostel just a day before the incident.Police have registered the case as an accidental death for now, and further investigation is underway.
