BERLIN, – Germany’s energy regulator on Thursday issued new rules allowing electric vehicle owners to use car batteries to power their homes or feed electricity back into the grid, a breakthrough for vehicle-to-grid technology after the agency revised its draft following industry criticism.

* The Bundesnetzagentur’s MiSpeL ruling, short for Market Integration of Storage and Charging Points, removes a regulatory barrier that had prevented owners of subsidised solar systems from mixing rooftop and grid power in batteries without losing their renewable energy support (EEG) payments

* In practice, EV owners can store low-cost solar or grid power in their car batteries and later use it at home or feed it back to the grid when profitable, while preserving EEG support for eligible green electricity

* The new framework uses accounting methods based on 15-minute meter readings to distinguish solar, grid and stored electricity flows

* During a transition period until September 30, 2027, users need approval from grid and metering operators, giving them time to set up IT and billing systems
