Germany will introduce the Digital Master Assessment Test (dMAT) as an additional requirement for Indian graduates applying for Master’s programmes through the Academic Evaluation Centre (APS) verification process from 2026.
According to the official dMAT website, the test will become a new part of the APS documentation and verification process for Indian students seeking admission to graduate programmes in Germany.
The dMAT is developed by German universities in collaboration with the Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development (g.a.s.t.). It currently includes a General Academic Module, which is required for the APS verification process in India, along with subject modules in Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Data Science.
The subject modules assess applicants’ subject-specific knowledge and their ability to apply that knowledge at the Master’s level. All questions are in a single-choice format and are conducted in English.
Test includes core and subject-specific modules
The dMAT consists of two parts, a core module and a subject module. The core module measures general study aptitude through three subtests that assess cognitive skills. The subject module evaluates knowledge gained during previous studies and the ability to apply it to solve subject-related problems.
The examination is conducted digitally at test centres designated by g.a.s.t. and lasts three-and-a-half hours, including a break between the two modules.
Two universities currently use dMAT
According to the official website, the dMAT is currently used by RWTH Aachen University and the Georg-August University Göttingen as part of their admission process.
RWTH Aachen University uses subject modules for its MSc in Battery Science and Technology in Engineering, while Georg-August University Göttingen uses the test for its MSc in Data Science programme.
The dMAT certificate reports results using a percentile rank and a dMAT score ranging from 0 to 200. Universities decide independently how they use the scores during admissions.
According to the official portal, the dMAT certificate remains valid indefinitely and can be downloaded from the test-taker portal once results are available.
