Social activist Chandan Kumar Singh performs collective pind daan in Gaya

Gaya: Continuing a tradition started by his father, Babu Suresh Narayan, in 2001, social activist Chandan Kumar Singh on Sunday performed collective pind daan and tarpan for the souls of thousands of people who died in major terror attacks, natural disasters, stampedes and accidents in India and abroad during 2025 and 2026. The rituals were conducted at Dev Ghat near the Vishnupad temple under the guidance of Swami Venkatesh Prapannacharya of Ramanuj Mutt.Singh performed pind daan for victims of several major tragedies in 2025, including the Maha Kumbh stampede in Prayagraj, the New Delhi railway station stampede, the Pahalgam terror attack, the Mumbai train accident, the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, the Mansa Devi temple stampede in Haridwar, the Kedarnath helicopter crash, the Gujarat firecracker factory blast and the Trikuta landslide in Jammu & Kashmir, among others. He also performed ‘tarpan’ for victims of tragedies in 2026, including more than 900 people, among them 15 Indians, who died in floods in Nepal in Aug this year. Tarpan was also offered for 15 Indian tourists killed after a speedboat capsized near Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island, 20 workers killed in a gas leak-related explosion inside a hydropower project tunnel in Sikkim, around 100 people who died in floods in Assam, 12 people killed in airstrikes in southern Lebanon, and 10 Indian soldiers who died after an Army vehicle plunged into a gorge in Doda.“I performed tarpan for the peace of the departed souls because pind daan can be performed only a year after a person’s death. My father, Babu Suresh Narayan, started the tradition of collective pind daan in 2001, and I have continued it since his demise in 2014,” Singh said.
