Shillong: The Meghalaya govt has constituted a one-member Commission of Inquiry, headed by retired judge Justice T Vaiphei, to probe into the social unrest and violence in the Garo Hills that claimed two lives. The violence occurred following the filing of nomination papers for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections on March 9.A notification issued by the home (political) department on May 8 said the commission will examine the “larger issues arising out of the violence and social disturbances and the subsequent loss of human lives and properties”.The commission is tasked to examine the circumstances that led to the violence, identify acts or omissions by individuals and authorities, and determine whether there was any failure in preventing the disturbances.It will also study the root causes of the unrest, recommend administrative and institutional reforms to prevent similar incidents in the future and suggest measures such as financial assistance for those who suffered loss of life or property.The commission has been asked to submit its report to the state govt within six months from the date of the notification.
