Kanpur: The water level of the Ganga rose further on Tuesday, crossing the warning mark at the Ganga Barrage and triggering apprehension of flooding in several villages situated in the Katri areas.According to officials, the water level at the upstream side of the Ganga Barrage was recorded at 114.41 metres, while it stood at 114.09 metres downstream. The warning level at the barrage is 114 metres, while the danger mark is 115 metres.The officials said the rise in the river level was primarily due to the release of a large volume of water from upstream barrages and dams. Around 5,44,373 cusecs of water has reportedly been released from the upper reaches. As per the district administration’s communication, 1,12,979 cusecs were released from Haridwar Barrage, while 1,05,633 cusecs were discharged from Narora Barrage.The rising water level has also affected areas around Shuklaganj, where the river level was recorded at 112.82 metres. The warning level there is 113 metres, while the danger mark is 114 metres.The impact of the rising water level is already being felt in villages located in the Katri areas. Floodwater has reached the boundaries of several villages, raising concerns among residents living in low-lying areas. Villagers fear that the water could inundate village roads and damage standing crops. In some areas, crops have already been submerged in floodwater.The district administration has sounded an alert and put officials and field teams on watch. Bathing and boating in the river have been prohibited, and residents have been advised against going near the river or entering vulnerable areas.Officials said the situation was being closely monitored and further action would be taken depending on the rise in the river’s water level.
