Patna: The city’s cinephiles were taken on a nostalgic journey with ‘Dastan-e-Patna Talkies’, an interactive conversation held on Saturday that explored the history of Patna’s iconic cinema halls and their role in shaping the city’s social and cultural life.Hosted by Arthshila Patna, the event revisited an era when cinema halls were more than just venues for watching films. They were vibrant social spaces where generations came together, creating memories and stories that continue to resonate with audiences even today.Moderated by Rajiv Soni, curator, alongside writer Arun Singh, the conversation traced the evolution of cinema-going in Patna, from early cinema tents and modest single-screen theatres to grand cinema halls and, eventually, multiplexes. Speakers reflected on the changing ambience of these spaces, their snack counters and the experience of watching films over the decades.Rajiv Soni highlighted how changing tastes and technology transformed the cinema experience from traditional snacks such as tantan bhaja (a nostalgic puffed rice snack) to caramelised popcorn, and from simple single-screen theatres to modern multiplexes.The organisers informed that the event brought together people associated with some of Patna’s most cherished cinema halls, who shared stories, memories and anecdotes from the city’s cinematic past. The conversation offered an engaging glimpse into how cinema halls evolved alongside Patna, while continuing to preserve memories that remain part of the city’s cultural heritage.

Suman Sinha, owner of Regent Cinema Hall, recalled his nearly six-decade association with the iconic theatre. He said he had been visiting Regent since he was about three years old and had closely witnessed the evolution of cinema in Patna.
