Rajkot: A 33-year-old farm labourer, Ravi Chorasa, was allegedly beaten to death on Monday night after being accused of stealing a wallet at Nasitpar village in Tankara taluka of Morbi district.After the killing, Ashoksinh Zala, 40, a farmer, lodged a complaint at Tankara police station against Ravi’s friend, Anil Makwana, for murder.According to the complaint, Chorasa had been working on Zala’s farm for the past year. On June 28, Chorasa and some of his friends had gathered at the farm when Anil Makwana found that his wallet was missing. As the group looked for it, Makwana claimed the wallet was found in Chorasa’s possession.Enraged at the suspected theft, Makwana allegedly assaulted Chorasa with a stick, repeatedly striking him on the head and other parts of the body. Chorasa suffered severe injuries and began bleeding profusely from the head.The complaint states that Makwana, along with another person, took Ravi to Morbi Govt Hospital on a motorcycle. However, Chorasa lost consciousness on the way. Doctors declared him dead on arrival. Police said Makwana fled the hospital on learning of Ravi’s death.Tankara police then went to the crime scene and the hospital and launched an investigation. Investigating officer J D Zala told TOI that preliminary inquiries revealed that Chorasa was a resident of Morbi and was unmarried.Police arrested Makwana, 42, who works as a driver, for the murder. The stick used in the alleged assault has been seized. Makwana was produced in court on Tuesday.
