Kolkata: Former India footballer and former Basirhat South MLA returned to Trinamool on Sunday. Biswas, a former TMC member, had joined BJP ahead of the 2021 assembly polls, but resigned shortly.Along with Biswas, Basirhat I block Congress president Kader Sardar and former vice-chairman of Basirhat Municipality Parthasarathi Basu joined Trinamool. The induction took place at TMC’s central office in Basirhat in the presence of TMC MLA Saptarshi Banerjee.“In the 2016 assembly election, TMC had nominated Dipendu from Basirhat South, and he won the polls. In 2021, the party did not renominate him, leaving him upset. He subsequently joined BJP, but was denied a ticket there as well,” a TMC senior said. Sources said Biswas was made a permanent member of BJP’s state committee but he resigned within a few months.Admitting that leaving TMC was a mistake, Biswas on Sunday said, “CM Mamata Banerjee is carrying out development work in Basirhat. I rejoined TMC to be a part of that effort.”Asked if the Basirhat ‘son of the soil’ was expecting a ticket in the assembly election, Biswas said: “I will carry out whatever responsibility the party assigns to me.”BJP netas, meanwhile, said that Biswas’s return to the TMC fold was no cause for concern for BJP. “Dipendu Biswas had no significant impact or activity during his brief tenure in BJP. His decision to rejoin TMC will have no impact — certainly not in Basirhat,” a BJP senior said.
