Kolkata: Blue Line (North-South metro) services were hit for half an hour on Sunday after a youth died by suicide at Tollygunge (Mahanayak Uttam Kumar) metro station.Sources said the youth, aged around 25 years, jumped before the approaching train on the Shahid Khudiram-bound tracks at 4.20 pm. The driver immediately applied the emergency brake, but it was too late. Metro staff rushed to the spot and switched off the third rail that supplies electricity for rake movement.

“The body was pulled out in 20 minutes and services along the entire Blue Line were restored at 4.50 pm,” a Metro spokesperson said. While the rescue operation was on, there was no electricity in the Tollygunge-Maidan section, for which trains got stuck in various stations. Since Tollygunge is a surface station, the body was immediately accessed and taken to the Down (Shahid Khudiram bound) platform, before being shifted to MR Bangur Hospital, where the youth was declared dead. A number of trains were cancelled or rescheduled and the cascading effect lasted for almost an hour. “I walked into Rabindra Sarobar station around 4.40 pm to discover no services were available. Normal services resumed around 4.55 pm and I was able to board a train to Baranagar,” said Aheli Sen, a commuter.
