Ahmedabad: A flyer arriving in the city from the UAE was found to have concealed gold inside capsules which he had swallowed. Medical tests confirmed that it was gold, which valuers put at 135g of 24 karat valued at Rs 21.9 lakh. Based on inputs, AIU officers of Ahmedabad customs intercepted him on his arrival at the SVPI Airport from Abu Dhabi on Feb 19.“Upon interrogation, the said person admitted that he had concealed metallic/contraband items in his body by swallowing them. Based on an order dated Feb 19 by the chief judicial magistrate, Ahmedabad, the passenger was admitted to Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad to detect the concealment in his body,” a release by the customs department said. At the hospital, doctors found that the man had concealed three capsules of yellow colour and one spherical steel-coloured ball. The medical report on Feb 21 confirmed the concealment and subsequent discharge. The govt valuer confirmed that the metal was gold. “The same were seized under provisions of the Customs Act, 1962 since they were attempted to be smuggled into India by way of concealment in body without declaring to customs. Further investigation is in progress,” said the release.
